1181 December 9th, 1937. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}5/AP. Messrs Hubert H.P.Trist & Co., Brislington, BRISTOL 4. For the attention of Mr.B.E.Draper. Dear Sirs, Motor Brake Linings Further to our letter of 3rd. April, we have not made as much progress as we had hoped, chiefly because we have been deprived of our test rig due to Works re-organisation. We have tested a considerable variety of linings on cars and we can say that we do not think that any lining of the Ferodo M.R., BZ., MK.{R. E. B. Meade-King}, or Halo III. or V.{VIENNA} type is likely to give us permanent satisfaction. These linings are all asbestos, bonded with resins of various sorts. Nor do we think that an asbestos-rubber lining such as Ferodo R.U. or R.L. is likely to be satisfactory. The kind of lining we favour at present consists of a mixture of the two, and possibly containing graphite, such as is made by the Thermoid Co. for clutches. We realize that we may have to sacrifice a high co-efficient of friction and non-fade characteristics to some extent. Do you think it would be possible for you to make up a lining bonded with both resin and rubber and having a coefficient of about 0.33? If Mr.Draper is ever up in this part of England we should be pleased to see him to discuss the matter, and should appreciate notice of his visit, so that the writer may be available. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
