- 2 - Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}4/LGS.7.24. It should be borne in mind that correct pedal travel is in no way an indication that the front brakes are correctly set because these are entirely servo operated and will not influence the pedal travel. FRONT BRAKES. The only indication that these require adjustment (apart from a decrease in the front braking) is excessive movement at the end of the cam operating lever. The movement for correct adjustment should be from .4" to .5". Perhaps a more convenient method of checking the clearance is by the movement of the two levers on the axle to which the pull ropes are attached. The corresponding movement here will be (measured at the end of the levers) approx. .5" to .6". These levers when depressed must both return freely under the action of the pull off springs. If they tend to stick the cause must be investigated otherwise the brakes may rub, become hot, and seize. The method of adjusting is the same as the rear brakes but the clearances must not be reduced less than the lower values given above. These values provide for the slight movement of the operating mechanism when the wheels are on full lock. The brakes when adjusted should be tested by jacking up the wheels and trying them on full lock either way, for rubbing. One point to note is that when brakes are first set up, the pull levers on the axle may not be quite down on their stops (they are set like this to allow for stretch in ropes). (contd). | ||
