re Bentley Steering

In reply to your memo EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}9/MH.{M. Huckerby}21.8.35, we would like to point out to you that the oil recommended in the Bentley instruction book is engine oil - see page 28.

The five cars which we have had the steering sticking on the left locks are,- B-116-BL, B-71-BL, B-66-EF, B-130-EF and B-174-EF. All these steering boxes having been filled with oil from the works prior to despatch.

For your information, we have been able to overcome all the complaints by executing the following work .-

1. Drain out oil from steering box.

2. Lapping in worm and nut with Whitmore's "O" compound oil. Quantity used about a good half gill, which we leave in the box, and fill up with Wakefield's Castrol XL.

It appears to us that the oil used in the Bentley steering boxes is rather too thin, and this oil appears to be ordinary engine oil.

Do you manage to overcome complaint cases in the same manner at the Works?
