R.R.59 ALLOY PISTONS.

Replying to Roy.{Sir Henry Royce}2/MG.23.1.35 re. the standardisation of pistons in R.R.59 material on Kestrel engines; we should at present have to do a full Type Test on a Production type engine before Air Ministry approval for the change in material could be obtained.

Little experience of the R.R.59 material has been obtained on our engines, except in the case of one Type Test when piston failure occurred, caused by conditions now recognised to be beyond the design of the piston then used.

In view of the superior physical properties of R.R.59 however, it is to be used for the pistons of the new Ramp head Kestrels which are shortly going up for Type Test.

A standardisation Sheet will be issued as soon as sufficient experience has been gained on these engines, which will also cover present type Kestrels.
