December 30/22.

Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd.,
DERBY.

For the attention of Mr Whitehead.

Dear Sirs.,

Your Ref. Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}12/HJ221322.

In reply to your letter of the 22nd, with reference to dipping headlights for your 20HP chassis, we shall be pleased to make up a pair of lamps for you on receipt of further details of the trunnion pieces to be fitted by us.

With reference to the ball fixing you propose to adopt, while the writer can see no need for this in the arrangement shown, as you already have adjustment provided in one direction and a plain swivel would appear to allow for universal movement, this fitting does not infringe any of our patents, nor in the writers opinion is it likely to infringe any existing patent.

The writer has recently been in touch with Sir Henry Maybury with reference to the proposed Lights on Vehicles Bill, and the question of dipping headlights was raised personally with him. It was understood that the considered opinion of the Committee was that any No-Glare device which can be operated at the discretion of the driver would not be entertained, and the only circumstances under which dipping headlights would be permissible is when the lamps comply with the Lights on Vehicles Bill when in the "up" or "Normal" position, and as these requirements call for the main beam to remain below a 4 ft. level from the ground, it would appear that further depression of the beam is unnecessary and almost useless.

This information is handed on for your guidance in case you are not aware of the official position up to date.

Yours faithfully,
JOSEPH LUCAS LIMITED.
(Sgd) Oliver Lucas.
