1245 To Rolls-Royce Ltd. Derby......... Copy to Derby Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Levallois Sr/VAS/ET.26.6.39 Re: CHASSIS 3.CP.144 - Mr. FRANCQUI (Owner's Complaint Report N°P.241) With reference to H.11/H.23.6.39, a copy of which Sr. sent you as per Sr/VfI/24.6.39, we confirm the conversation we had with Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} over the telephone this morning, concerning the wear of the camshaft on the above car and the alteration from hydraulic to solid tappets. 3.CP.144 - As the alteration from hydraulic to solid tappets has been carried out including the alteration to the marking on the flywheel, as per Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swd.l.1/IAP.15.II.38, we are, as suggested by Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}, acting in the following manner, in view of H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints}'s memo, the contents of which we fully appreciate: Run the engine with the present "solid" type plungers and, as soon as we are satisfied that the slow running is quite O.K., we shall remove the "solid" type plungers and fit the original hydraulic type and then note if there is an appreciable difference in the slow running of the engine. Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} informed us that, by retaining the latest type camshaft (E.88760) in conjunction with hydraulic type plungers, the slow running of the engine may be upset, but Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} suggests that we try out this scheme and note results obtained, and then inform Works. If the slow running is notpassable we will, as agreed, fit an early type camshaft; if this is necessary, we shall use the camshaft we have just removed from chassis 3.CM.91 (Thiel), providing we can stone up the worn and scored cams of this shaft. As explained over the telephone, several of the cams of this shaft (3.CM.91) have the following amount of wear on the tip of the cam, plus score marks: N°I cam has .006" wear N°3 " " .005" " N°4 " " .005" " N°24 " " .010" " plus badly scored. As suggested by Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} we are reconditioning this shaft as far as possible, but should we find that we cannot dress up N°24 cam then, upon receipt of a telegram from us, Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} will arrange to have sent to us, by return and by air mail, a new and early type camshaft. | ||
