1110. c. to Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/Cgs. EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/NRC.{N. R. Chandler}5/JH. 27th August, 1938. Messrs. Borg & Beck Co.Ltd., Tachbrook Road, Leamington Spa. For the attention of Mr. Armitage. re Spherical Nuts 10" & 11" CLUTCHES. Dear Sirs, Your letter of the 18th instant, and reports from our Works, have been handed to the writer for investigation. We find that when the bedding of the spherical nuts is mainly confined to the extreme inner diameter of the spherical facing, that the finger setting does not remain constant, and that a finger with its nut so bedding will generally sink below the others, which you will agree is potential cause for judder. We suggest that the cause of this sinkage is that the bulk of the load is concentrated at the bottom of the spherical hole where the thickness of the metal is reduced and at the same time the load per unit area increased, with the result that there is more yield under load. We would therefore ask you to arrange for the heaviest bedding to occur nearer the middle of the spherical facing, and not at the extreme bottom of the hole. We trust that this will explain the matter clearly. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
