To Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to EPC. X4257 R4/G15.1.21. X.4257. - RE BRAKES -) "GOSHAWK".II In addition to increasing the diameter of the rear brakes from 12" to 14", we think it will be wise to increase the clearance of the frame over the axle by another ½", making a total of 5½". Assuming the rubber buffers to be put in between the frame and the axle, this should allow 4½" movement on the bump when the 1½" rubber is compressed to ½". We think the dimension we have at present hardly sufficient. This would not matter about the first few frames, but I think the later frames should be altered to these dimensions. It is assumed that in the case of heavy bodies the light frame will have to be trussed; this we shall not do until we find it necessary. Since decided, while altering, to make this 6" deep. Regarding the joints belonging to the brakes on the back axle, we have variably drawn these for 5/16" and ¼" bolts with ferrule constructions. We have come to the conclusion that the 5/16" is the right size, making a light fitting with a big joint, so that it will not wear and get rattly, that is to say, the bosses of the rod connections etc. will look a little bit out of proportion.
