PHANTOM.

We require from you experimental reports on the following points on the above chassis :-

(1) TAPPETS.
The tappets are a continual source of trouble on the Phantom. We ought to really investigate and find out what it is that actually causes the noise. We could make up tappets which were made specially slack in certain directions in order to exaggerate the noise. We might also try without any springs in the bottom of the tappets. I have an idea that this might cause a click. It is a matter which requires thorough investigating and even if it takes 5 or 6 weeks to arrive at any definite conclusions, it will be worth it.

(2) CLUTCH.
Clutch jaggers on the Phantom is another serious complaint. We ought to carry on with the test suggested of increasing the movement in the clutch so that we can have more flexibility for the first pick-up. We also want to know what limits we can allow on the fabrics and driving plate running out of truth. We want to make sure that we are using the best material.

(3) CLUTCH STOP.
This is still not entirely satisfactory and should be investigated at the same time as No.2.

(4) RATTLES ON ENGINE GEARS WHEN THE DYNAMO IS OFF-CHARGE.
This is a matter on which we shall sooner or later have complaints - at the moment we do not know how to deal with it. We ought to check all our cars and see whether any of them suffer from this fault. I believe that 10-EX has this complaint. We should therefore investigate it on that car.

(5) CONTROLS RATTLING IN STEERING COLUMN.
This is always being complained of. We arranged with RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} to fit a special scheme on to 11-EX car. We ought to get a similar arrangement fitted up on to all the other cars as soon as possible and report on the result.
