to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} X8830 EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/6.1.28. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} RE SPORTS SALOONS ON "ALPINE PHANTOM". When in London yesterday, I discussed with "C" & "Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}" the question of fitting saloon bodies to the Alpine Phantom. For some while it has been the feeling of some of the parties concerned that we shall not be able to get along very long with only a standard open sports model, and that we shall receive a strong demand for a sports saloon. I believe that most parties are coming to this conclusion, or have already done so. It was therefore thought adviseable that we should be prepared for this in every way by:- (1) having suitable illustrations of a saloon body ready at the time of the announcement of the open car. (2) Assuring ourselves and all parties concerned that the sports engine is suitable for a light closed body. (3) building and testing such a sports saloon as soon as possible. I will deal with these items in order. (1) It is hoped that, by next Wednesday, when I shall again be in Town, a suitable design of saloon will have been evolved. I am enclosing herewith a tracing of the proposal, which we favour for technical and logical reasons, sketches of which we shewed to "R" before he left. We suggest that the body be either panel or Weymann construction, but that our first experimental one should be the former as it will tell us the most. (2) There seems to be a fear that we shall not be able to make a Rolls-Royce car out of a sports body of the closed type. I assured the meeting that we ourselves have had experience of closed bodies with the sports engine and that we see no serious indications | ||
