81487. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/AD. December 19th, 1931. The S.U. Company, East Works, Bordesley Green Rd. Adderley Park, Birmingham. For the attention of Mr. Skinner Dear Mr. Skinner, We do not know if you are going away for Christmas but if you have time to come over here before the holidays we should be very pleased to discuss our carburetter tests with you. The Works close on Wednesday night. We are interested in your petrol consumption tests but the really interesting thing from our point of view would be the petrol consumption from these carburetters driven as hard as possible. We can frankly say, however, that we find your carburetters as economical as most. One trouble we have run into with the very large S.U. is that if the throttle is suddenly opened from the ticking over position the depression pulled the piston over until it cross wound in the pump. This caused momentary sticking and hesitation in the pick up. We rather think that with these very large pistons which must have a load of over one cwt. under any of these conditions, the aluminium guide is too weak. However, we are not worrying about it because we have actually got our best results with two 1 1/2" carburetters on the 40/50. You may be wondering why we have not been bothering you for needles but we find that we can easily alter them by copper plating them and rubbing off where we find they are too weak. Kind regards, Yours sincerely, | ||
