NUMBER PLATES Replying to your memo of 8.3.56, the most recent information I have with reference to plate sizes dates back to 1952, but so far as I know it is still current. The longest plate is that of Colorado, which can vary according to the number of digits from 12 1/2" to 14 1/2" x 5 1/2" and the deepest plates are 6 1/2", which occur in South Dakota, New Jersey and Massachusetts. All other States, at the time our list was compiled, fall within the maximum dimensions of 14 1/2 x 6 1/2, but so far as I know there is no federal regulation governing number plate sizes in America and in the past various States have been known from time to time to change their own specifications quite arbitrarily, which leaves one always uncertain as to whether one's information is up to date.
