- 7 - HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}1/VS.{J. Vickers}21.11.38. Rear Springs - continued. The rear shackles were assembled by the Garage prior to the car leaving for France; the shackle pins are satisfactory but appear to have been running rather dry. Rear Brakes. Complete to LOP.GB.3830. The off side brake linings in BZ material are worn down to the rivets, but the near side linings show little signs of wear. The off side linings were removed after 8,476 miles, the replacements covering 7,255 miles. The near side linings were also removed after 15,002 miles and the replacements covered a mileage of 729. It would appear that the off side brake has been over-heated since the operating mechanism is discoloured and shows no signs of grease. The unhardened links and jaws on the brake shoe equalisers produced in 3% nickel steel to Ex.31932/3/4 as an alternative to 5% nickel case hardening steel are quite satisfactory and show no signs of wear. The pins, connecting pull rods and expanders, however, are slightly worn. The rubber washer fitted to expander housing to exclude water from the brakes is perished and has been replaced; the rubber cover for the expander unit supplied by Messrs. New Hudson is also perished, due in all probability to excessive heating. Rear Hubs. Brake drums produced in I/CNC with cast-in end plates to GB.3690/1. The off side drum is coated with a deposit of burnt oil, whilst the near side is cracked at one cooling fin - see attached photograph. Rear Brake Equalisers. This assembly, which incorporates schemes PD.215 and S.CD.827, is in a satisfactory condition. continued. | ||
