- 8 - HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}1/VS.{J. Vickers}21.11.38. Rear Brake Intermediate Shaft. Produced to GB.3655 and incorporating G.CD.484 and S.CD.500 modifications to rear brake equalisers. General condition good. Hand Brake Lever Assembly. With the exception of the ratchet shield which failed after 10,018 miles this assembly is in good condition. Gearbox. Assembled in accordance with LOP.GB.3550 and scheme PD.239. All of the gearbox castings and cover plates are in good condition. The 1st and 3rd motion shaft is in satisfactory condition, but the 1st speed driven gear on the 2nd motion shaft GB.3365 shows signs of picking up. The internal bearing surfaces for the needle rollers are satisfactory, but the needle roller bearing surfaces show signs of pick-up at the end of the bearing shaft GB.3383. An increase in end float of .008 was noted at the 2nd motion shaft. This wear appears to be evenly distributed between the following pieces :- GB.3461 Thrust Washer in BZ/PC.214 material. GB.3385 Thrust Washer in S/ZN.2072 material. GB.3365 2nd Motion Shaft in S/ZNX. material. With the exception of indentations produced by the guide plate GB.3924, the 3rd motion shaft GB.3951 is satisfactory. The direct and overdrive cones of reduced diameter and increased width are satisfactory. The 55º cam angles on the 3rd and 4th sliding piece GB.3952 show signs of wear. It should be noted that this component is unhardened. With this exception the sliding piece is in good condition, having been tested and found free from cracks. The guide shaft GB.3935 is bent and also pitted at the point where the steel ball in aluminium cage GB.3467 fits. All gears in the box are bedding evenly and all ball races are satisfactory. | ||
