SECRET.

SS.{S. Smith} HYPOID REAR AXLE CASING.

Herewith we send N. sch. 2854. shewing the modifications to the axle casing to overcome the distortion which occurred on the low gear full throttle test.

The modifications have been made to the pattern and proved to be satisfactory by the last test, in which no distortion took place.

As there seems to be indication either of the bridge moving or of the casting settling under the load and heat we have suggested that the spigot on the bridge might be lengthened to give more normal surface.

The only further alteration to the casting which we propose is reducing the dia. of the bore of the pinion nose. This has several advantages, and the present dia. is unnecessarily great.

We also suggest that the oil scoop recently introduced into the pattern should be removed, and the experiment with the scoop formed in the bearing housing proceeded with.

Some of the information given on the drawing is intended for R.{Sir Henry Royce} who does not know all the circumstances.

We have the original drawings which were issued to the Works in the first case with us, and they can be sent if desired, but we believe we have incorporated all the information on N. sch. 2854.
