Referring to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}7/LG.14.1.29. we are sending you a blueprint of the arrangement of the clutch, as this may be a distinct help to you in considering :-

a/- The question of replacing the fabric coupling with an all steel type of joint.

b/- Improving the capacity of the narrow ball bearing carrying the clutch member on the gearbox side.

There are possibly two ideas worth drawing attention to :-

1/- Forming the inner race of the bearing with a very much extended base parallel to the axis so that instead of having approximately .3 axial width as a guide one could arrange at least 1" or 1¼", particularly in view of the fact that the flexible coupling appears to demand a very serious modification.

2/- The second proposal would be to use a plain cylindrical surface for the inner member of the ball bearing making this as wide as possible with a slight lead in at each side for the ball. The bearing would then be constructed with a cage and ball unit as part of the outer race, the inner race would slide into same. This would give absolute freedom for clutch movement.
