Letter to Walker Steel Works Ltd. regarding experiments with aluminium brake drums and an enquiry about 'Walloy' castings.

Dear Sirs, Replying to your letter of the 22nd. inst., we note your preference for quoting for solid cast brake drums, but we are not in a position at present to experiment with solid drums in any new metals, the material we now use being quite satisfactory. We have been experimenting with aluminium drums for some time now, and we get much better results from them than from solid iron drums. For a given weight of drum they are capable of absorbing more work than can a solid iron drum. This means the liner needs to be tougher, hence our enquiry for your price for "Walloy" castings. Before we experiment with new metals we enquire about prices so as to save ourselves the expense of experimenting with materials too dear to use on production. We do not think there is much to discuss with Mr. Wolstenholme, but if he would like to come down here, we shall be pleased to see him on Thursday next, 28th January at either 11.a.m. or 2.30.p.m, as he prefers. We should like to know some of the physical characteristics of "Walloy" i.e. the value of Young's Modulus and Brinell hardness figure.
