To Ey. From En. Copy to Moy. HH Ds. Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} EFC. - 1 - 74554 Bn{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington}15/W8.8.19. 40/50 HP. CHASSIS. ------------------ RE MATERIAL FOR SECOND 500 CHASSIS. ---------------------------------- By2/F7.8.19 & By12/F7.8.19. With reference to Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}'s note Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}3/WJ4.8.19, I am not quite in agreement with some of the points mentioned in your note, and give below the procedure I think we should follow on certain items which I have looked into:- 1. Petrol Tank. This is dealt with in my note Bn{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington}14/W8.8.19. The second five hundred chassis should be ordered up with tanks of 20 gallon capacity only when we have satisfied ourselves experimentally with the new design in which the tube is not carried right through the tank. X.25656 2. Wiring. I do not think there is any likelihood of the new Rolls-Royce scheme of wiring being completed and proved in time to bring it in earlier than at the 501st. chassis, and it will be necessary therefore for us to carry on with the present scheme in which we use the Lucas Distribution Box etc. i.e. The intermediate scheme, for the whole of the first 500 chassis. As you are aware we have not wired up completely one of the experimental chassis yet. Definite instructions for this intermediate wiring scheme for the first 500 chassis will be issued as soon as possible. 3. Shock Absorbers. These are promising well in the Experimental Dept., and we hope shortly to be able to issue instructions to the Production Drawing Office for manufacture. These will be brought in quite early in the first 500 chassis, although many cars will doubtless be fitted on the road. 4. Steering Column. This appears to be in order. 5. Dynamo. I would like to hold up the order for any more dynamos beyond the first 500 for some days until Mr. Clarke has had an opportunity of enquiring into the position of Messrs. Smith's Dynamo which (Contd) | ||
