TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} S E C R E T. DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/M1.5.25. XL4683 'V' SERIES SCUTTLE ISOLATION. We have received the completed standardisation sheet for the scheme of isolation of the scuttle as shewn on N.scheme 1910. A similar sheet which was sent to Sales we could not get completed. They inform us as a result of consultation at the C.S.C. that they experience trouble with the 2 rubber washered bolt scheme in the case of the 20HP., and are recommending total isolation, especially in the case of fixed roof cars. Their objections seem to be as follows:- (1) The coachbuilders invariably either fail to give sufficient clearance for the scuttle framework to allow the bolts to move, or else they tighten them up too severely and therefore destroy the effectiveness of the isolation scheme. (2) That with the perpetual movement of the bolt on its spherical seating squeaks are set up and lubrication is difficult. (3) That when the chassis deflects in the centre and the scuttle attempts to approach the dashboard at the top, the latter is forced forward and causes it to knock against the end of the bonnet. This results in bonnet squeaks and knocks. They therefore are prepared to sign a standardisation sheet for total isolation, which we know they have used for some 3 years on anything up to 5,000 cars (40/50s.) The only difference in respect to 'V' series is that we now ask the radiator to be supported from the top of the dashboard, but we think that the dashboard alone is sufficiently stiff to do this. We would be glad if you could let us have your views immediately on this point as we wish to get another standardisation sheet going as soon as possible, and we want to know first of all whether you would agree to the Sales scheme. We think that the objections raised by Sales appear to be genuine, and subject to your approval, we are prepared to accept them. DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} | ||
