WD.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} WILL SAY

The auxiliary drive coupling referred to in Item 17 of the Machinery Statement is, according to the Admiralty, immaterial as the boat builders will have to supply intermediate shafts between cruising engine and main gearbox. Consideration must be given, however, to the direction of rotation of the cruising engines to ensure that they drive the propeller shafts in the right direction.

CRUISING ENGINE AND GEARBOX.

Item 17 calls for reverse gears and ahead clutch on the cruising engines. So far as I know the Admiralty are not taking any steps to obtain either a suitable engine or gearbox. The Modern Wheel Drive Co. Ltd., who are London agents of the S.L.M. gear are preparing designs of a suitable 150 HP. reverse gearbox.

Should it be decided to proceed with the conversion of the B.8 engine, the above requirements need to be incorporated and a decision taken with regard to the type of reverse gear to be carried.
