Rus. Senior Range. 1044 Chassis engine development. (Re memo. Ru.7/H.7-w-41) Bbo. No. 2. This engine was put back a long way by the decision to fit the chain drive to the camshaft. The forgings for the sprockets are not forthcoming from HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} yet: he having had the request for these 10 days ago. I imagine Reynolds will be asked to cut these, and supply a chain at the same time. Other parts which still require finishing are 1. Crankshaft. 2. Con-rods. 3. Camshaft. The first test we have in mind for this engine is of course running on after switching off. he think that the basic cause of "running on" is valve temperature, and our efforts would be directed toward (a) Proving this to be true. (b) Evaluating larger stems. (c) Evaluating the latest type of sodium cooling in conjunction with (b) (d) An attempt (over and above (b) and (c)) to improve the natural cooling of the exhaust valve, (proximity of circulating water to the stem, and increase the area so cooled). (e) The effect of "squish". he may be able to suitably modify existing heads to do this. (P.T.O.) | ||
