Steering gear failures and modifications for Phantom III and Wraith models.

(c) Failure of bearing rollers which carry the follower roller. It was considered that the experience gained with Wraith and Bentley should provide the necessary safeguard in connection with the changeover to follower rollers mounted on ball bearings instead of roller bearings. This ball bearing follower roller was on the last 15,000 miles P.III tested in France. The collapse of the roller bearing was such that on certain cars this has been changed twice, clearly indicating the necessity of the improvement which is now being applied. WRAITH 1. Major Modifications to "A" and "B" Series. The number of chassis still requiring to be done has been further reduced from those shown in BY.1/G3.6.39. 2. Steering Gear The number of changes effected are now greater than those mentioned in BY.1/G3.6.39, namely, 130 Wraiths and 125 Bentleys. 12 of these have new rollers only 50% tested, and for the sake of caution these are to be replaced also with the fully tested parts. There were also 50 of the pre-Wraith, or early 25/30 h.p. cars, on which this part should also be changed, and this was agreed to. Depots are also being instructed that in the case of accidents, the steering parts should be send to W. for examination. Any doubts concerning the follower rollers on B V. {VIENNA} are considered to have been cleared by the tests enumerated on Page 4 of BY.1/G3.6.39. | ||
