To DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 20 HP. CHASSIS CONTD. E5/G4/4/19. Mr. Royce would like Mr. Day to make schemes of the following as soon as the necessary information comes to hand, and send blue prints of same to West WitteringHenry Royce's home town for his criticism. It will be understood that certain of these items are dependent on various schemes in No.1 category being received in Derby :- Instrument board and wiring. Exhaust pipes and silencer. Water connections. Oil fittings. Control mechanism. Ignition wire carrier. Bonnet and fittings. Starting handle. Shock damper (like 40/50 HP now in process of design at West WitteringHenry Royce's home town.) Referring to the provision of an air pump or other means of obtaining petrol feed, Mr. Royce remarks, "test the vacuum system." With regard to the battery ignition, as this matter will take some time to scheme, it is proposed to get the car running in a preliminary way on an ordinary magneto. At a later date a system of ignition might be provided in which the magneto and battery use alternately as desired, a common high tension distributor, the battery acting as a stand-by to the magneto. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Many of the schemes mentioned in the first section would have reached Derby before but have been retarded by work on the 40/50 H.P. chassis etc. | ||
