Dear Sirs,

We are in receipt of yours of the 7th instant Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 2/EB, re height of our cells for 40/50-HP. batteries.

Some months ago we decided to increase the height of the bottom rests and thus give greater depth of sludge space as it was found that the majority of batteries failed owing to this space getting filled up and short circuits occuring. After some tests we increased the depth by as much as 1/4" as this should give an extra life of at least 5,000 miles to the battery, but in doing this our works did increase the overall height of the cell by nearly 1/16". We are afraid that the fact that there was a limit to the height of the cell was overlooked by us when we did this and we regret this and the mistake is entirely ours.

With regard to the interchangeability of the cells, would this slight difference affect it ? Would it not mean that there was that much more or less sealing over the tops of the cells, which would not be noticed when the battery was sealed.

It is possible for us to go back again at the sacrifice of some sludge room but if you can overlook this mistake it would be very much better for the battery.

Regretting that you have been troubled.

Yours faithfully,
PETO & RADFORD.

(Sgd) C.R.N.Minchin.
