TO BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to cd. wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ORIGINAL DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}1/M8.9.23. GOSHAWK 11. DIPPING HEAD LIGHTS. X4555 We send herewith N.sch. 1454 showing the dipping head light arrangement modified to suit the larger lamps, RB.{R. Bowen}65. and also improvements in one or two other particulars. In place of the ball ended rod we shew plain forks. A method of lubricating the lamp pivot is also indicated and also the cross shaft. It will be noticed that the gauge of the lamp carrying forks has been increased as the first set appeared to be rather weak in this respect. It will be noticed that we shew a very sharp bend in the sphere and we believe you will be able to get this. If not however we will consider running the sphere straight into the socket without bending, thereby raising the lamp about .375". We should like Derby to scale the whole of this drawing as lever lengths etc have been altered slightly. We also send N.sch. 1455 showing the modified operating gear on the steering column. The principle alterations are the lever is lengthened so as to make the knob more accessible, and to give a little more control all the parts are lightened, the first set being considered slightly on the heavy side, and finally in order to prevent objectionable banging on closing (which was continuous in the first set) we have suggested a friction device which steadies the action of the spring, and which we think can be so adjusted as to ensure quiet operation. We are not exactly sure of the strength of the spring on this friction device and should like some alternatives prepared. [Handwritten note] We wish the twisting spring on the foot countershaft called for on N sch 1355 to give 10 inch lbs of torque to be reduced so as to give one inch lb. | ||
