X 7770 761 To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Copy to W.O.B. Lp.{Mr Lappin} Re Mr.Fairey. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}14/E2.2.34 He had lunch with me yesterday and in the course of conversation he made it very clear that he was delighted with his P.II which has now done about 55,000 miles. He said he did not know what on earth we had done to it last time but that every since it had been really marvellous! He mentioned that at last we had been able to satisfy him with brakes. I was a little in the dark because I did not know what we had done but I gathered that we had put him on larger and larger brake drums because he was always able so quickly to wear out anything we had given him until the present ones. I should be interested to know what the size of the present drums is as compared with standard and whether we contemplate putting larger drums of this type on the Vulture, which in view of its performance and will presumably need better brakes than the existing Continental car. Mr.Fairey, as you know, also has a Bentley on order. What are we proposing to do for the brakes on that car? Ought we not to put on for him the experimental larger drums as one would imagine under the conditions under which he drives that he will soon wear out the standard brakes. I know that this is against all normal rules and regulations but we have always regarded Mr.Fairey as some one whom we could allow to have an experimental feature so long as we told him in advance that such was the case.
