Dept. Messrs. Rolls, Royce Ltd., DERBY. [Handwritten left] Please return to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 1. 1. 29. Dear Sir, Reference your letter Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}6/LG of the 22nd ult. We have prepared a few Engine Foot Rubber blocks in an endeavour to obtain the properties indicated by your curve C, showing a reading of 750 lbs. for a deflection of 0.150 ins. I am sending you, under separate cover, six of these blocks and I shall be glad to have your opinion of them at your early convenience. We have tested them out, and all of them give deflections between 0.140 and 0.160 ins. at 750 lbs. load. We think, therefore, that this rubber compound, which we are designating as No.6, might meet your requirements. We shall be interested to know whether the large consignment of blocks which has recently been delivered to you meet your requirements as regards variation. It has been impossible for us to test individual blocks before sending to you, but we see no reason why deviations greater than .007 from the mean deflection at load should occur. As a production job, this new mixing No.6 may introduce difficulties liable to lead to variation, but if these samples seem to you to represent any distinct advantage over any you have had before, we can take measures to produce relatively large quantities within very small limits of variation. [Handwritten right margin] May have to wait a little while Yours faithfully, FOR DUNLOP RUBBER CO. LTD., [Signature] | ||
