48050 Mt. Sft.{Mr Swift} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} RMC. Mr. Order Office. BY4/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 28.6.26. RECEIVED 24 JUN 1926 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I CYLINDER GASKETS. ----------------------------- In regard to an arrangement made with Messrs rayens, who were of the opinion that joints made entirely from copper asbestos without the use of brass sheets, would be better than our present brass sheet reinforced with copper for the joints, we have obtained a total of 57 cylinder gaskets made up in soft copper sheets; the only way to try these out is for us to test them out in quantity. I am issuing this instruction with this object in view. 1. Stores should issue 50 of these to Sft.{Mr Swift} who should have them fitted to engines, the engines marked, and the numbers of the engines handed on to MX.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} By this means we will find out whether the joints are more satisfactory on test or not. 2. We should use "Heldite" in making the joints, as at present, the object of "Heldite" being not to enable us to use a poor cylinder head gasket, but to make a super-job of an excellent gasket. 3. The balance of 7 gaskets remaining, should be sent into the Experimental Dept. for them to fit to New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I engines as and when they require new gaskets. A special note should be made by the Experimental that these are fitted, and notice taken as to whether they are, in their opinion, better or worse than the present standard type. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Ry | ||
