Continuation of letter to :- W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham, Esq. Page 2. 25/5/39. cast iron liner, but think we now have this taped. The aluminium has to be cast on to the iron hot in a die, and an oxide film forms on the iron liner before the adhesion can take place, preventing a good bond. We have found a way of preventing the formation of the oxide film. As the experiments involved the construction of dies, they have been a little lengthy. A die is in hand to make the drums of which you sent us drawings, and the liners are in our factory, and we hope to let you have a casting in a week or so. With regard to magnesium pistons, we have supplied Mr. Brooks with information on the material, and he is preparing a design along the lines we indicated I think, and may be getting into touch with you shortly. We shall have our first batch of pressed pistons running in our own single cylinder unit in a week or so. I have been persuaded to go and try and help Siddeleys make aero engines. I shall be very surprised indeed if I am not back here within a few days. Yours sincerely, [Signature: Tom.] | ||
