Bailey - Chief Engineer} on this subject:- "It was not my intention to convey the impression that brake seizures would be immediately overcome. The object of my memo was to make it plain that the seizures we were experiencing at present were from a different cause from those we were dealing with a year ago. "The seizures which are occurring at the moment are the result of the cars which are fitted with synchro-mesh mechanism being driven at a higher average speed owing to the customers being unable by the gear to change from top to 3rd and vice-versa readily. The Works are dealing with this by giving wider clearances over the shoes to start with. This is a temporary measure. In design it is being dealt with by the introduction of the steel shoe."
