X4228 c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}1/H13.4.23. re. 20-HP. Starter Carburetter Failures. We are now getting our 20-HP cars into service, and one of the most serious troubles we are experiencing is the failure of, or the complaints caused by the faulty use of the starter carburetter. In one or two instances, we have already experienced definite trouble caused to the engine by the excessive use of the starter carburetter. Although very definite instructions are given in our instruction books and to the various agents with regard to the use of the starter carburetter, we still find it is being used, either purposely or accidentally, and we feel that similar trouble will be experienced when the cars get into service. We are also having trouble with leakage of petrol from the starter carburetter when it is considered to be closed which failure seems to develop worse after the car has been in service for a short time, and several carburetter troubles have been traced to this failure. We have already brought to your attention the importance of the close fitting of this plug, and special attention has been given to this job. We still feel, however, that this fitting will not be satisfactory, and we again make an appeal that this plug should be a closer fit, or it should be arranged that the petrol supply to this carburetter is more definitely cut off, when the starter carburetter is out of action. Also, in view of the complaint made in the first paragraph, I feel that we should consider some action whereby the starter carburetter jet is automatically cut off when the main throttle is put into action.
