Messrs Rolls Royce Limited, DERBY, England. Dear Sirs, Attention of Mr. S. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Grylls. With reference to the A.C.I washer which you handed to Mr. Russell Sharp, corrosion tests have been carried out in our Laboratory over a period of seven days at atmospheric temperatures and 200ºF respectively, using MOBILOIL HGL as the fluid. The general conclusions are as follows:- Tests at Room temperature. The A.C.I washer shows no signs of corrosion and is still quite bright. The bronze washer is definitely corroded. Tests at 200ºF.{Mr Friese} The A.C.I washer shows no corrosion but slightly dull in surface colour. The bronze washer is very corroded. In regard to Hypoid Gear Lubricants, you are no doubt aware that the General Motors Specification 4655.M. demands that corrosion shall take place on copper strip within five minutes at room temperatures. We read this as a recognition of the fact that lubricants for severe service in Hypoid Gears are of little value unless they show corrosion on a copper strip although naturally the corrosion is very much reduced on bronze, and negligible on certain light alloys. Trusting that the above information meets your requirements, Yours faithfully, VACUUM OIL COMPANY LIMITED. O.{Mr Oldham} T. Jones Chief Engineer.
