PROPELLER SHAFT DAMPER.

25/30 and Bentley.

We send you herewith Lec.5698 - Modification to Propeller Shaft Damper to reduce cost on 25/30 and Bentley.

We have been given to understand by RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/EG. that the phosphor bronze hub of the damper is a source of trouble to production due to the difficulty of producing sound castings of such a size in that material, particularly as it is considered that a high quality of freedom from porosity is necessary as the section is so light.

In addition, the two flywheels are in 5% nickel steel for which we pay 5/6d each for the forgings alone.

The proposed modification is to make the hub in silico manganese steel and harden to 401-444 Brinell before grinding. This should provide a satisfactory bearing surface. The weights are to be made in mild steel and bushed with phosphor bronze bushes.

The scheme shows only nine spring recesses as that is the number of springs being used on production, but we now understand that the alteration to the existing jigs to reduce the number of recesses from twelve to nine is not worth the saving which would be obtained.

As it is desirable to get this scheme going as soon as possible owing to difficulties on production, we are assuming that it will be cheaper than the existing scheme, but will G/Rb.{R. Bowen} please confirm this and let us have a figure for any saving.

Cont'd.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary}
