ORIGINAL To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} E2/M1.5.22. RE CORK FACED COCKS. X3451. Some time ago Messrs Benton & Stone voluntarily made a model of one of their cork faced cocks, specially designed by them for our 40/50 chassis. We send same herewith. You will see that it is a heavy and bulky article, hardly the sort of thing we want to load up the chassis with. Mr. Royce at one time was interested in this type of cock because he had heard that it had given good results in aero work but on examining a model, not the one we are sending you, he did not like the fact that the cork washer itself had to form a very extensive joint made by some sort of cement, apart from the rubbing faces which had to be prevented from rotating by burrs raised in the metal. Also, for our future work it is likely that we may depart from the present scheme on the 40/50 chassis altogether. Could you kindly say what you think about this model.
