F.S. HARDY - 328 from Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} RMG c.Rn{Mr Robinson}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} GRY.{Shadwell Grylls} Should this be for you? F.H. PHANTOM III GEARS BOXES. 2nd & 3rd gear modification. After fitting the special pieces to prevent gears coming out to a selected gear box taken from production for Sr's Trials Car, the result was somewhat disappointing, as the gear box on re-test after modification was found to have developed several noisy features. The side shaft gears were noisy and uneven, and there was a very marked second gear whine when running on top gear. The gear box had to be requietened. In view of this it was arranged that we carry out the changeover on another production gear and for this purpose we handed to the Experimental Dept. a very quiet box. It has had the modifications fitted and I have to-day re-tested it. Generally speaking it is not so quiet as it was originally, but it is still passable. The outstanding feature is that it has developed a rather high pitched whine when running on indirect gears which is apparently a ball race noise, this noise is not audible when idling. I think this serves to show that the modification pieces can be fitted into an existing gear box without spoiling it, and owing to the shortage of satisfactory gear boxes, I do not think any useful purpose will be served by modifying any mere boxes belonging to chassis on test.
