E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} E/HDY.{William Hardy}2/HP.16.12.36. Phantom III Gearbox. With reference to memo HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}2/CB.12.12.36, and drawing EX.I.96, we agree with the suggestion that the washer between the bearing and the nut at the front end of the 2nd motion shaft should be increased in diameter and thickness. In addition it should be hardened as it has almost the same duty to perform as the washer on the other side of the bearing which is already hardened. There appears to be no possible disadvantage in the use of this washer, and, therefore, we think it should be applied to production at once. We send herewith N.Sch.4977 showing in addition to the washer alteration, an increase of the thread diameter for the nut at the front end of the 2nd motion shaft which is indicated by the recent trouble with the rear end. This alteration can be applied at the same time as N.Sch.4969 for the rear end. E/HDY.{William Hardy} N.Sch.4977 herewith. | ||
