Hydraulic Adjustable Tappets.

Tappets chromium plated by Durion Ltd., fitted to No.1 tappet block 4 - E.87336. Tappets chromium plated by Fescolised process 20 - E.87336.

The tappets, although untouched, first shewed signs of making a noise after 4,000 miles running. This was only at low speeds and at tick-over speed, when the oil pressure had dropped to 2-3 lbs. No noise was heard at higher speeds, subsequently the ball relief valves were cleaned and the gauze filter washed. This improved them till the noise was hardly audible, but towards 9,000 miles they again started to be heard, although no one tappet became outstanding. The flows of oil to the individual tappet blocks were quite even, the varied metering holes have definitely made this a satisfactory job. We feel that provided the oil feed can be maintained this type of tappet as now fitted will give little trouble in the customers hands as the difficulties we experienced during the previous tests seem to have been overcome.

Cylinders E.85114.Lec.4711.

The cylinders were not examined and gave no trouble during the mileage.

Dynamo & Water Pump Drive.LOP.E.87081.Lec.4406/4545/4414.

The removal of the dynamo presents considerable difficulty, it being necessary to remove the exhaust manifolds. The pump was in good condition at the end of the mileage. The dynamo failed to charge after 6,000 miles the trouble was traced to cracked terminal insulators, causing undue heating up, due to short-circuiting, which led to rapid wear of the brushes, and consequent deterioration of the commutator. New terminals were fitted and the commutator skimmed up, since when no more trouble was experienced.

Camshaft & Bearings.LOP.E.85281.

No trouble has been experienced and the camshaft and carrier bearings gave no trouble.
