Dear Sir,

Motor Car Licenses.

The new scheme is dependent on the Finance Act which was passed early in the year and the Roads Act which has just received the Royal assent.

This Bill will come into force on the 1st January.

Everyone owning a car will have to get a license from the County Council or the Boroughs. Each license will apply to a particular car and not to a person.

There are to be rules prescribed by the Minister of Transport regulating the nature of these licenses, but at the present time no such provisions have been published.

On making enquiries of the Automobile Association and Motor Union we have been able to ascertain that the following is what we may expect:-

(a) A license will have to be applied for in respect of every car.

(b) A manufacturer will be able to get a licence which can be applied to any car provided that he only has one car running on each at the time. The manufacturer will be able to have several of these licenses to cover his cars.

(c) The license will have to be attached to the car in a conspicuous way. It will have to be on the front of the windscreen and close to the near side or on the near side of the body on a line level with the driver's seat.

(d) Apart from the exhibiting of the license there will be applied to each motor car a number which will have to be attached and rendered legible by day and by night, the same as at present.

(e) All existing cars will have to comply with the regulations before the 31st January.
