Dear Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair},

Very many thanks for yours of the 22nd. With reference to your query concerning the Benzene equivalent used by the A.I.D. at Kidbrooke, you may take it as a rough estimate that approximately 3% of Benzene equals 1 octane number when the fuel is around 75 to 76 octane and the tests are conducted at 100°C jacket temperature (i.e. under the same conditions as the present Ministry tests).

In other words, your sample would appear to be between two and three octane numbers down on the reference fuel.. Taking the reference fuel at the equivalent of about 76 octane, one would estimate the sample to be about 73 - 73.5 octane.

Kindest regards,

Yours sincerely,
F.R.Banks.
