Thank you for sending the necessary parts and instructions for modifying the exhaust system to make it clear the crossmember. We tackled the job and first of all found it took three hours to dismantle the exhaust system. This was due to the fact that although the sliding joints could easily be rotated, they could not be withdrawn owing to the rings of carbon found on the ends of the pipes. After eventually extracting them, they could not be put together again as gas-tight joints. We next welded up the joint at the front end of the intermediate expansion box leaving the one sliding joint at the rear of the front expansion box, and then built up the system with a view to marking off the best position for the flanges to be inserted. As however we had erected the pipe with the one existing sliding joint, and one welded up, we did not see any object in doing more to it, as the one weld will probably be sufficient to prevent the pipe from dropping on to the frame again. We will report in due course as to whether this is so. ---------- Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/IMW.{Ivan M. Waller - Head of Chateauroux} Ivanher. Waller. | ||
