We send you RECEIVED drawing Lec.1343 giving particulars of -

The rear spring.
Attachment of rear spring to back axle.
Rear spring shackle.
Rear dumb iron and cross tube.

The spring shown is the one described on our recent drawing Lec. 1341 This spring should be arranged so that it is flat under normal load, but is not level, the centre line of the top leaf being .250 lower at the rear end.

It was desired at one time to fit slings under the axle to limit the rebound, but these were found impracticable, owing to the presence of the tie rod which takes up all the room near to the springs, and does not leave a smooth space for the sling band.

If an extreme rebound occurs, which might conceivably have the effect of swinging the rear shackle right over, then the lubricator on the shackle bolt would be sheared off.

Supposing that both shackles had gone over, and the fact had not been noticed, the absence of the lubricators might cause attention to be drawn to the reverse position of the shackles.

The rear dumb iron cantilever for carrying the spring has been made, as was first shown on our general arrangement. The frame cross tube has been butted and bored out taper at each end, the cantilever pins being driven in tightly on the taper and pinned.

Replacement can be effected by pulling out the cantilevers with a suitable withdrawing device after the pins have
