CLEARANCE BETWEEN INLET VALVES AND GUIDES. Origin. Overoiling due to oil being sucked down the clearance in guides. Report of Experimental Test. By fitting inlet valves with a diametrical clearance of .0015 to .002 in 3-AZ-170 in place of standard clearance at .002 to .003, consumption raised from 350-750 m.p.g. Valves with reduced clearance have been run successfully on Test Bed units and 35-MX{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} (15,000 miles) without any sticking. Present limits.
