PHANTOM III STANDARDISATION OF PARTS
Date Issued: 26.5.38
Sheet No.: P.29.
Drg. No.: E.87347.
L.O.P.S.: E.86708.
Description: TIN-COATED PISTONS.
Purpose: To prevent piston "scuffing".
Brief Report and Remarks:
Recents experiments show that by tin-coating the piston, scuffing of the skirt is avoided. This process will enable us to use any type of oil with safety and will also help in reducing the time necessary to "run-in" engines on test.

Old Parts: Material £0.10.11., Labour cost unaffected, Total £0.10.11.
New Parts: Material £0.13.11., Labour cost unaffected, Total £0.13.11.
Increase in Cost: £ 0. 3. 0. G/M/24/4/38
Cost of Tools £: NIL.
Production Position and Comments:
Tin coating of pistons to reduce possibility of "scuffing" during "running in" is to be introduced at 105th. chassis in 'D' series, it being possible to tin coat finish machined pistons, since deposit is only .0002 thick.
No tool cost is involved, but factory cost of plating is 3d. per piston or 1/od. per chassis.
It is not recommended, however, that present "running in" times for Production engines be reduced on account of impairing reliability. RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}
Authorisation to Proceed:
Introduce on the 105 Chassis in D Series.
