To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/IMW.{Ivan M. Waller - Head of Chateauroux}2/JH.2.9.37. 32-EX - Phantom III. Report on tappet adjustments carried out during 13,300 miles running in France. Both inlet and exhaust valves were run at .012" clearance and remained quiet throughout the mileage. The clearance of 14 of the tappets did not change by more than .002" and of these 6 required no adjustment and the other 8 were only reset once. Of the remaining 10 tappets 8 were reset twice with a maximum change of .002" at a time, and two were reset 3 times. These were A.5 inlet and A.12 inlet which lost a total of .005" and .007" respectively. These results are satisfactory and indicate that with the wide latitude given this camshaft, the tappets should run for pro-longed periods in service without requiring adjustment or being noisy. The changes recorded during this test can be regarded as the normal settling down together with the small discripancies inseperable from consecutive adjustments.
