GWH. {George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} has been carrying out a lot of tests on glands of shock absorbers on 18.G.IV. As originally fitted up - i.e. as you are now making them - the glands leaked badly. By trying various schemes, one was evolved to HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 1042, a print of which we attach.

We agree that the effect of the vent from the shock absorber valve cover to the gland is a mystery. We did not believe it so we sent out one of our men from here to check the tests and he confirmed that it did reduce the tendency to leak. We therefore consider that we should standardise this gland until we know of something better. As it is quite certain that the gland now being made leaks we think it urgent that the gland to HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 1042 should be instructed as soon as possible.
