We send herewith a print of "N" Scheme 702 shewing the proposed side steering tube for "Goshawk II". The length is fixed from the positions of the steering box given on the most recent LeC , and the amount of joggling is worked out from "N" Scheme 699, of which we send you a revised print because of the new dimensions for the steering column. We also send a print of "N" Scheme 711 shewing the position and length of the steering column for "B" and "D" steering. "N" Scheme 702 shews the forward end of the side steering tube with a joint similar to that designed for "Goshawk II" and both springs concentrated at the back. But in this case we have set up the springs to a load of 300 lbs, which is half the load for which the 40/50 springs are set up. Two alternative suggestions are shewn, of which the one shewn in Fig.2 allows the more conventional split pin for locking the outer retaining nut, and also for locking the ball pad nuts. With reference to the latter, the object of placing the washer so that it slides on the diameter of the shank of the pad instead of being pulled up against the shoulder by the nut, is that this washer might be used to adjust the pressure of the spring. We are sending drawings of the revised steering gear box in the course of a day or so. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} R.R. 285A (100) (T) (S.H) 159. 11-20.
