20/25 Improved Silencer

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} reported that a modified silencer will be ready next week, and he expects this to be a great improvement over the existing one, particularly as regards high speed power and booming.

P.II and Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}1/E10.5.32.

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} referred to Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}'s note and pointed out that one of the main reasons for the 10,000 miles test on 18-EX was to try out various new parts, so as to release them for the next sanction of material. These items include crankshaft, brake drums, wheels, pedals etc..

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} suggested that it might be advisable to continue the test in order to pass these parts for standardisation.

Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} said that in view of the small production of P.II, he did not consider it necessary to continue the test just to test the above items only, and with the gear box admittedly unsatisfactory. He expressed the opinion that the car should be recalled and that the gear box should be made right before resuming the 10,000 miles test, even though it involved the delaying of ordering up the next batch of material.

It was decided to bring the car back to Derby at once.

P.II Synchro mesh box and cut-out.

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} pointed out that the present synchro mesh gear box has no bosses to carry the cutout mechanism.

H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} noted this and will give it his attention.

Silencers.

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} raised the point that silencers should not be expected to stand up to dynamometer test. To do this they have to be made heavier than they need to be for the worst condition of road use. Also the dynamometer test takes a great deal of life out of the silencer and serves no useful purpose.
