melted from the end connections, and also from the banding wires on the pulley end of the armature.
b The commutator was badly burned in two places.
7 The machine was found to be of the early type, having a C angle of 120°.

It would seem that excessively bad commutator conditions necessitated the removal of all the brushes for rebedding, and the renewal of the outer control brush.
The bad commutation would most likely have been in the form of flashing, due to the dynamo running, connected to the battery, with a break in the armature winding as the result of overheating and throwing the solder from the commutator connections.
