-3- Rear Axle. 4.R. 8 x 34 Near side tube bent at hub end and off-side end plate buckled due to accident. Centre casing (not ribbed type) badly 'sandblasted' on underneath exposed surface due to road conditions. Slight signs of fidgetting on diff. box and crown wheel faces. Driving flange- the acme thread shews slight signs of fouling the bore of pinion housing cover, the clearance was .009 and is an improvement on the previous 10,000 miles test. Oil Seals, condition good, no oil having got past into the axle tube. Axle shafts twisted off-side 2º, near side 2½º. Gears - condition good. Diff. box was polished and magnetic tested for cracks and found O.K. Brake rope guide shews signs of heavy wear, this was pointed out to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} ------------- Rear Brakes. Hand brake shoes lined with H.D.Ferodo, friction surface badly disintergrating and is a poor job. Foot brake shoes lined with S.5805 material - general condition good except for Brass Rivets, in service the head of rivets spread and signs of shearing on shank of rivets. Carrier plates distorted and damaged due to accident. Bell crank levers (with oilite bushes) general condition good. Needle Bearings for Toggle Shaft - condition good. ------------- Rear Hubs. Near side Brake Drum smashed due to accident. Off-side " " " " " " Drums in R.R.Cast Iron, friction surfaces in good condition. Bearings damaged in Hubs due to accident, otherwise the condition of parts was good. ------------- Front Axle. Pivots, a slight increase in floating movement had developed in the off-side pivot. Thrust races in top bearing of pivots in good condition. Yokes G.84414/5 - Bottom pivot housings slight picking up has taken place on face of flange in the bore, also badly indented by the ends of needle rollers. Bottom pivots, off-side which was not protected by leather gaiter the bearing was in a dirty condition and pitted on tracks, both housing and pin were indented by needle rollers. Upper Pivot Bearing - the needle bearings were in good condition, one needle roller had been assembled out of position and trapped between end of spindle and distance washer, Top Race small indents on Ball Track G.84411. Near side conditions with leather gaiter protection were much better job and suggest the leather gaiter be standardised. Pivot Pins were in good condition. ------------- Front Brakes. Brake Shoe S.5805 material in good condition. Brass Rivet heads material speading as on rear shoes, even wear having taken place to an average thickness of 5/16. Toggle shafts shews signs of rust but these had not been cadmium plated to drawing, the same applies to actuating lever G.84123/4. Carrier plates, general condition good. Rivets for oil catcher on brake drum has been fouling the near side inner carrier plate. contd. | ||
