To Es., Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} & Ho/Con. from RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} X327 RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}6/MS2.1.35. SPECTRECodename for Phantom III FRAMES Mr. Hunt of Messrs. John Thompson Motor Pressings Ltd., Wolverhampton, called on Monday December 31st. to inspect the SpectreCodename for Phantom III Frame which had failed as the result of braking tests. The weld, whilst considered satisfactory, had (through a misunderstanding on their part) not been carried round the portion of the frame adjacent to the Spring Housings, and this had contributed to the failure by allowing the frame side plates to spring away from the channel instead of giving support where the braking torque tends to twist the frame. The bearing torque is transmitted to the frame via the spring housings, which unite the Side Members and the Front Crossmember, and Mr. Hunt was of the opinion that if the welding was continued round that portion of the channels to which the Spring Housings are secured, the frame would then stand up to tests of this description. The pitch of the weld on a pair of Frames just received has been reduced from 1.250 to 1.000". A further set of frames is being prepared and despatched, and it is proposed that the pitch for welding should be .750. Mr. Hunt was definitely of the opinion that the spot-welding was entirely satisfactory. RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} | ||
